The romantic getaway weekend at a resort planned by Private Investigator Rachel (Ray) Christie and her beau Police Officer Ron Hartwell, was interrupted by a scream. Looking for the source, they met Kate Vance who had just discovered her uncle's body with a bullet hole in his head. Kate hired Ray to try to find out if her uncle had committed suicide or is he had been murdered. It turned out that her aunt had been killed at home a day or so earlier. The police decided it was a murder/suicide brought about by her uncle's side effects of Parkinson's Disease. Kate was said their estate was worth more than $20 million and other relatives were trying to get the couple's money. Kate offered Ray $100,000 to prove her uncle was innocent.
Ray's investigation involves following many paths looking for clues. She decides he was murdered and is determined to find the killer. There are several possibilities as well as some more murders and attempts on her life. Other crimes are also involved advancing in the plot.
This is the fifth book in a series. While it can be read on its own, there are some references to previous books. They can basically be ignored, especially when they mention injuries she has suffered, but it is unsettling to have characters introduced who obviously had major roles but we aren't told enough about what those roles were to compel her to react to them the way she does.
Ron gets very upset when Ray cannot be with him because she is working on her case. As a policeman, he should be more understanding and less a whining, spoiled jerk. That controlling tendency set off red flags for me but was treated as a relatively normal part of her attempts to define their relationship. He didn't look at it the same way.
Sabena Stone has a tendency to stereotype characters. She describes an Asian Indian doctor's attitude towards her as "that of an upper caste Indian toward an untouchable. I got the distinct impression I was nothing but an ant to him, an ant that he could squash if he wished, and he was someone I should revere." Many people have complained that their doctors act like they are God but don't have their cultural background described as part of the reason. She also seems to have an issue with fat people.
I don't understand what she meant by "It was pretty in a rural sort of way" or how a sentence about the color of the leaves fits into a sort paragraph about the dangerous condition of a road.
Ray does some very basic work, e.g., determining the trajectory of the bullet to locate it. I cannot imagine a police department not doing that as a matter of routine. The Police Department promises to withhold information about one death for forty-eight hours yet she turns on the television news that night to see if they run a story about it.
A psychiatrist has sessions with patients in public locations so it would be more comfortable for them. Since many sessions can become emotional, a public setting does not seem conducive to treatment.
While the plot moved well, the side issues spoiled my enjoyment of the book.

Murder One Too Many Volume 5 Sabena Stone 9781480271111 Books Reviews

I loved this book, the characters and their interaction, the mystery and the twists and turns and the fun in following Ray Christie around as she figures out 'who dun it!' This is the second book I've read in the series. Can't wait to get started on another one. I highly recommend this book if you like a good mystery.
Good mystery offering quite a few alternative endings, though the guilty party or parties becomes relatively easy to guess toward the end. Only complaint is that there are references to events that may have been contained in one of the earlier books in the series regarding the main character's background.
Nicely developed characters and an intriguing plot highlight this well written story. I would have given five stars except for a few situations that were so totally off base from they way law enforcement operates. Overlooking those few incidents, this is a well written book and a fun, easy read. I enjoyed this book.
Rachel Christie is a successful P.I. and isn't afraid of anything or anybody. She has a boyfriend, but personally I could care less about romance in my murder mysteries. Her techniques for pursuing and questioning suspects can get a little over the top. I guess maybe that's what makes her fun. I think you will like Rachael, quirks and all.
I am a big fan of crime thrillers and really enjoyed this book. It is one of a series where private detective Rachel Christie is trying to uncover a truth that's buried beneath lies, greed and cruelty. Ray, as she is called, uses her sharply-honed sleuthing skills to get to the bottom of an apparent murder/suicide that isn't what it seems, and stops at nothing to close the case. Although this is the 5th book in the series, it is the third one I have read. Highly recommended.
This story has some good points, but the relationship between the police officer and the PI isn't one of them. It seems that the PI Rachel Christie is the only one who has work demands. She keeps saying that they have much to work out, but they never get to that part of the relationship.

The other characters are not fully drawn. The partner who is going to school and who keeps his job as a waiter so he can meet women, has an affair with their client, would seem to be too busy to be a partner in anything.

The mystery part of the story is what brings this book up to three stars. There are enough twists to keep you wondering for a bit.

I will probably read another of Ms. Stone's books.
I enjoyed this book - the first I've read of Ms. Stone's. I like Ray Christie. She's a bit like other popular female PIs as far as getting injured a lot and apparently having a past with problems (like most folks!). Taking down a guy twice her size seemed a bit unrealistic, and if she gets this emotionally upset with all her cases she's going to die young! Also, the police seemed totally incompetent in this story and didn't seem to DO anything but wait for Ray to give them their next lead. Also, even going back and re-reading parts, I don't see how (trying not to spoil here) the particular person knew where the gun was ... even reread parts but couldn't see how she or who she was close to would have ever known this information). Ray's boyfriend was a bit on the selfish, whiny side, and didn't have a very good personality. All being said however, I did enjoy the read. Perfect amount of descriptive detail I could "see" most of the characters in my mind and also visualize the locale with minimal verbiage. Prose was crisp, natural, and the story moved at a nice fast pace.
